The university was established by Act No. 14 of 1994 passed by the Gujarat State Legislature and it has been approved by the Governor of Gujarat on July 27, 1994. Currently BAOU is India's seventh Open University. In relation to the establishment of the country The University has registered more than 100 lakh learners and as well as 72 programs this University provides. The headquarters of the university is located in Ahmedabad. The University has established a Regional Center on the campus of South Gujarat University, Rajkot and has started the process of establishing another established area center on North Gujarat University, Patan campus. The University has more than 507 study centers. It is a jurisdictional university on the whole of Gujarat.
