Columbia University (colloquially known as Columbia; officially as Columbia University in the City of New York) is a private Ivy League research university in New York City. Founded in 1754 as King's College on the grounds of Trinity Church in Manhattan, it is the oldest institution of higher learning in New York, the fifth oldest in the United States, and one of nine colonial colleges established before the Declaration of Independence.

Barnard College, one of the Seven Sisters schools, was established in 1889 (when it was also affiliated with Columbia); It is an undergraduate liberal arts school for women only. The college was named after Frederick Barnard, the 10th President of Colombia, whose campaign to admit women to Colombia resulted in collegiate courses for women beginning in the early 1880s. Women who completed the course were awarded a diploma from Colombia, but had to pursue their course independently. The program that led to the founding of Barnard was soon abandoned. The college moved to its current location in 1898 across the street from Columbia in the Morningside Heights section of Manhattan.
Most of the university's courses are open to students from both colleges, and their cultural resources are shared. After graduation, Bernard Student earned a degree from Columbia. Total enrollment (excluding Barnard and Teachers College) is approximately 32,000; Barnard has an enrollment of approximately 2,500 and a faculty of approximately 5,000.
Shaped by the vibrant culture of New York City, Columbia is less steeped in tradition than other private Eastern universities of comparable age and prestige. It was distinguished from other colleges from the beginning because of its heavy emphasis on subjects such as commerce, government, and navigation. It has several strong graduate and professional schools and various institutes for research and advanced studies that have a global outlook. The Teachers' College (1887), with a townhouse for a laboratory, is one of the best-known colleges in the country, and the College of Physicians and Surgeons (1767), together with the Presbyterian Hospital and affiliated institutions, form the centre.
