મહાભારતમાં ગ્રંથ મુજબ...
યુધિષ્ઠિરે શ્રીકૃષ્ણને પૂછયું : “વાસુદેવ ! આપને મારા નમસ્કાર !
"અષાઢ માસના કૃષ્ણપક્ષમાં કઇ એકાદશી આવે છે ? તે કૃપા કરી મને જણાવો અને એનું વર્ણન કરો.”
ભગવાન શ્રી કૃષ્ણ બોલ્યાઃ
“હે રાજન ! તો સાંભળો, હું તમને આ એક મહાન પાપનાશક ઉપખ્યાન કહું છું કે જે ઉપખ્યાનને પૂર્વકાળે મુની નારદજીના પૂછવાથી તેમને શ્રી પરમ પિતા બ્રહ્માજીએ આ કહ્યું હતું.”
નારદજીએ પ્રશ્ર્ન કર્યોઃ
“હે કમલાસન મહાપ્રભુ ! હું આપની પાસેથી આ માટે જાણવા અને સાંભળવા ઇચ્છુ છું, કે અષાઢ માસના કૃષ્ણપક્ષમાં જે એકાદશી આવે છે ? તેનું માહાત્મ્ય પ્રભુ એ બધું જ મન કહો!”
બ્રહ્માજીએ કહ્યું :
"તો મુની નારદ ! આ સાંભળો. હું તમને સંપૂર્ણ સંસાર લોકોના આ હિતની ઇચ્છાથી તમારા પ્રશ્ર્નનો ઉત્તર કહી રહ્યો છું.
અષાઢ માસના એ કૃષ્ણપક્ષમાં જે એકાદશી આવે છે એનું નામ છે “કામિકા એકાદશી”
જેના શ્રવણ માત્રથી જ મહાયજ્ઞ વાજપેય યજ્ઞના પુણ્યનું ફળ મળે છે. આ દિવસે શ્રીહરિ વિષ્ણુંનું પૂજન-અર્ચન કરવું જોઇએ.”
પ્રભુ ભગવાન શ્રીકૃષ્ણના પૂજન કરવાથી જે ફળ મળે છે. એ મોટું દુર્લભ પૂણ્ય છે. જે સાગર અને અરણ્ય સહિત સમગ્ર પૃથ્વી (સંસાર)નું દાન કરે છે અને જે કોઈ આ કામિકા એકાદશીનું વ્રત કરે છે એ બન્નેને એક સમાન ફળ મળે છે.
માટે પાપભીરુ એવા દરેક મનુષ્યે પોતાની યથાશકિત, પૂરો પ્રયત્ન કરવો ને અષાઢી કામિકા એકાદશીના આ દિવસે શ્રીહરિ વિષ્ણુનું પૂજન-અર્ચન કરવું જોઇએ. જે પાપરુપી નરકથી ભરેલ સંસારના સમુદ્રમાં ડૂબી રહ્યા છે,
આવા મનુષ્યોનો ઉધ્ધાર કરવા માટે આ કામિકા એકાદશીનું વ્રત સૌથી ઉત્તમોત્તમ છે. અધ્યાત્મવિદ્યા દ્વારા પરાયણ પુરુષોને જે ફળની પ્રાપ્તિ થાય છે. એના કરતા પણ ઉચ્ચતા મળે એવા ફળની પ્રાપ્તિ આ વ્રતને કરવાથી થાય છે.
આ કામિકા એકાદશીનું વ્રત કરનાર મનુષ્યોએ રાત્રી જાગરણ કરવું, તે કયારેય ભયંકર એવા યમદુતના દર્શન કરતો નથી અને તે કયારેય કોઈ દુર્ગતિમાં પણ પડતો નથી.
લાલમણીપ એવા મોતી, સુવર્ણ વગેરે દ્વારા પૂજન કરવાથી પણ શ્રીહરિ વિષ્ણુ એટલા તો સંતુષ્ટ નથી થતા કે જેટલા માત્ર એક તુલસીદળ દ્વારા પૂજન કરવાથી સંતુષ્ટ થાય છે.
જે કોઈએ તુલસીની મંજરીઓ દ્વારા શ્રીહરીનું આ પૂજન કરી લીધુ છે એમના સંસારી જન્મભરના તમામ પાપોનો ચોકકસ નાશ થઇ જાય છે.
એટલે ભગવાન શ્રીકૃષ્ણ કહે છેઃ
“હે,.. યુધિષ્ઠર ! આ તમારી સમક્ષ મે શ્રીબ્રહ્માજીના કહેવા પ્રમાણે કામિકા એકાદશીના મહિમાનું વર્ણન કર્યું.
આ એકાદશી સંસારના બધા જ પાતકોનો નાશ કરનારી છે. આથી સમસ્ત મનુષ્યોએ આ એકાદશીનું વ્રત અવશય કરવું જોઇએ. તે સ્વર્ગલોક અને મહા પૂણ્ય ફલ અપાવનાર છે. જે કોઈ મનુષ્ય પુરી શ્રધ્ધા અને આસ્થા સાથે આ એકાદશીનું મહાત્મ્ય સાંભળે છે એ તેના બધા પાપોથી મુકત થઇને શ્રી વિષ્ણુ લોકનો નિવાસી થાય છે.”

Yudhisthira asked Lord Krishna
“Vasudeva! My greetings to you!
"Which Ekadashi falls in Krishnapaksha of Ashadh month? Please tell me and describe it."
Lord Krishna spoke:
“Hey Rajan! So listen, I am telling you this is a great antidote to the anecdote that Shri Param Pita Brahmaji told him after asking Muni Naradaji in the past. ”
Nardji asked:
“O Kamalasan Mahaprabhu! I want to know and hear from you for this, or the Ekadashi that comes in the Krishnapaksha of Ashadh month? His Majesty, Lord, tell me everything! ”
Brahmaji said:
"So Muni Narad! Listen to this. I am telling you the answer to your question with the desire of this interest of the whole world.
The name of the Ekadashi that comes in the Krishnapaksha of Ashadh month is "Kamika Ekadashi"
Only by listening to it, one gets the fruit of the virtue of Mahayagna Vajpayee Yajna. Shrihari Vishnu should be worshiped on this day. ”
The fruit that comes from worshiping Lord Krishna. That is a great rare virtue. The one who donates the whole earth (samsara) including the sea and the forest and the one who fasts this Kamika Ekadashi gets the same fruit.
Therefore, every sinful person should do his best and worship Shrihari Vishnu on this day of Ashadhi Kamika Ekadashi. Who are drowning in the sea of sinful hell,
This Kamika Ekadashi fast is the best way to save such human beings. The fruit which is obtained by the pious men through metaphysics. Fruits that are even higher than this are obtained by performing this vow.
People who fast on this Kamika Ekadashi wake up at night, they never see the terrible Yamaduta and they never fall into any misfortune.
Even worshiping with pearls, gold, etc. like Lalmanip does not satisfy Srihari Vishnu as much as worshiping with just one Tulsi Dal.
Whoever has done this worship of Shrihari through Tulsi manjari, all the sins of his worldly birth are definitely destroyed.
That is why Lord Krishna says:
“Hey, Yudhisthira! This I have described to you the glory of Kamika Ekadashi as told by Shri Brahmaji.
This Ekadashi is the destroyer of all the sins of the world. Therefore, all human beings must fast this Ekadashi. He is the giver of heaven and the fruit of great virtue. Anyone who listens to the greatness of this Ekadashi with full faith and belief becomes free from all his sins and becomes a resident of Shri Vishnu Lok. ”
